Harvard Business School 100 Years

On April 8, 2008, Harvard Business School marked the 100th year since its founding and have been celebrating for the better part of a year. HBS recently hosted The Business Summit. From the website:

Leading in Business and Beyond is the culmination of the centennial year for Harvard  Business School alumni. Held on campus, October 12 – 14, 2008, The Business Summit featured thought-provoking discourse, debate, and insight into the seminal topics facing the global community. World Leaders, renowned experts, and HBS faculty took center stage on issues such as globalization, the interplay between business and society, and the meaning of leadership in the 21st century.

HBS 100 yearsThe HBS Centennial website has a section dedicated to the The Business Summit with several very interesting videos about leadership. (Unfortunately, these videos can not be embedded and must viewed on the website.) If you are not an HBS alum, you might not find the first few all that interesting although I watched and enjoyed them, but students of leadership will definitely want to watch the following videos:

Leadership for the 21st Century

Charlie Rose, Moderator – Journalist; Host, The Charlie Rose Show

A roundtable discussion with the 2008 HBS Alumni Achievement Award recipients:

  • John Doerr, MBA 1976 – Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers
  • Jeffrey R. Immelt, MBA 1982 -Chairman & CEO, General Electric Company
  • Anand G. Mahindra, MBA 1981- Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
  • Meg Whitman, MBA 1979 – Former President & CEO, eBay
  • James D. Wolfensohn, MBA 1959Chairman, Wolfensohn & Company LLC

Leadership

Professor Nitin Nohria, Moderator – Harvard Business School

A panel discussion with alumni:

  • Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, MBA 1987 – Chairman & CEO, Ayala Corporation
  • Jamie Dimon, MBA 1982 – Chairman & CEO, JPMorgan Chase
  • Orit Gadiesh, MBA 1977 – Chairman, Bain & Company, Inc.
  • G. Richard Wagoner, MBA 1977 -Chairman and CEO, General Motors Corporation

There are several other interesting videos including interviews with Bill Gates and others in the Institutional Memory – Community Narratives section.

While you may have to invest sometime to watch these videos, it’s worth it because rarely do you get to see and hear leaders at this level together for roundtable discussions like this.
